Upgrading Past Glory or Gory Memories
by Jackie Woods
Our exciting past experiences as well as our hurtful wounded ones get firmly etched into our memory banks. Thus, many of our conversations are filled with glory or gory memories. And that is fine as long as we don’t let those feeling-filled memories pull us backward.
Life should be an ever-onward and upward climb in discovering the best we have within us. To stop the glory or gory memories from ending with a period, all you need to do is let yourself feel whatever is the best heart quality with which you can fill the memory. Doing that moves the past onward and upward.
Even bad memories can become containers for qualities held in your heart. For example, I was once in a really bad car accident. The details of what I went through following that accident are pretty gory. So when anyone asks me to share about the accident I do, but I add that it was also a time of tremendous support. I then let my heart resonate with all the support that friends offered at that time so I could bring it forward into the present.
Even with glory sharings, we can get so caught up in the story that we forget to bring forward the love offering that was present. When I was in grade school several of us played using a double jump rope. It was a big deal to learn how to time your entrance with two ropes. When sharing that story I always feel the courage I had to gather to learn how to do it. So I make a point after sharing that adventure to walk away with the resonance of courage we all shared.
Of course, we need to be conscious of the qualities we resonate with others, but pulling them forward from the past is like adding whipped cream to your pumpkin pie. The continuity of connecting your past love gifts with the present builds up our awareness and helps us catch the little heart gifts as well as the big ones. And there are no situations where the heart is not present.
Some stories just pop into our minds for no apparent reason. Let’s say you have a memory of a best friend you had in grade school. Stop a minute and remember what qualities you shared. Perhaps those qualities were loyalty, adventure, creativity as well as friendship. Breathe those energies into the present and take them with you to your next activity. This allows your heart to add second helpings of love to your day. Plus, your aura gets a boost of light.
As always, your wisdom arrives at the most appropriate time. With all the devastation of Helene around us, it has been so uplifting to see people band together for support, care and community.
